Trieste and the Meaning of Nowhere, by Jan Morris. She intended this as her final book, though it was published in 2001 and she passed away only a few weeks ago. I wonder what it's like to retire from writing?

Anyway, although I've been aware of Jan Morris since I was a child, this is probably the first full book I've read by her, though surely I've read some of her essays over the years. I've got a few of her other books from the library as well. It's a fine book - I was often inspired to set it down so I could look up whatever she was writing about and see pictures for myself with Google Images, to supplement the many images she put into my head more directly. In my latest blog post I connect it with other things I've been reading and watching lately, all in the same region of Italy-Slovenia-Croatia.

Even though I read all but the last 25 pages of it in 2020, this book will count as the first I've "read" in 2021. Here we come, new tag!
