Book club dog night
Jun. 26th, 2018 11:15 pmTonight book club was at H's house - she's the mom of D's girlfriend, S. She lives across the street from the cemetery, about four blocks up the hill to the west of us. We had six people for book club: a brief discussion of On the Road, and a whole lot of playing with the new puppy (who looks like a yellow lab about 8" long) and the puppy's big brother Butters (a more cat-sized dog). H. told us the story, which I'd heard before, about how Butters had been attacked by a pit bull for 20 minutes once, when they lived on the other side of the neighborhood, until a passing pickup truck driver stopped and showed them how to use the dog's leash to cut off the air to the attacker, and how poor Butters had been so traumatized that he stands and shakes whenever he's around another dog... but! His heart instantly opened to the tiny puppy, and they are the best of friends, and Butters is very much calmer now.
Afterwards, four of us walked home together by the light of the full moon, and we were standing in the street outside T's house, making plans for the Fourth of July, when we saw D. walking down the street toward us. He'd obviously just walked S. home (she'd spent most of the book club at our house). But when he caught up to us, we learned that D. had just been attacked by a pit bull two houses this side of H&S's house! He already knew and was wary of the dog (which hadn't entered into the awareness of the four of us who had just walked that way minutes before), and out of the corner of his eye he saw it rush at him and grab his leg with its teeth, and he took off running and ran all the way down to Willamette Street before catching his breath and walking homeward to where we all were. He's absolutely fine - since he took off running so quickly the dog's teeth didn't even break his skin - but there's definitely an abrasion there. I fussed over him until his adrenaline had slacked off a bit, and he got a big bowl of ice cream. Yikes!
