T. Severin, sailing around windswept Cape Malia (Greece):

"The cove gave us protection only when the wind was in the west, otherwise it would have been a treacherous spot. A similar inlet 400 yards away was directly in the path of a wind chute. There the gale sweeping down the flank of the peninsula occasionally struck the sea in a whirlwind. The surface of the water would suddenly smoke white as the spume was skimmed away. Spinning devils of spray went gyrating out to sea, tossing spiteful little rainbows in the air that collapsed abruptly as their parent whirlwind tripped on the breaking water over a reef."

J. Muir, canoeing in iceberg-filled Sum Dum Bay (Alaska):

"About noon, when the tide was in our favor, we set out on the return trip to the gold-mine camp. The sun shone free and warm. No wind stirred. The water spaces between the bergs were as smooth as glass, reflecting the unclouded sky, and doubling the ravishing beauty of the bergs as the sunlight streamed through their innumerable angles in rainbow colors. Soon a light breeze sprang up, and dancing lily spangles on the water mingled their glory of light with that burning on the angles of the ice."

J. and I tried Go last night; neither had played before. His greater affinity with games of strategy paid off, alas for me. I downloaded a solitaire version and at least can sometimes win with a four-stone handicap...

I think Spiteful Little Rainbows would be a great name for a band.
