Today while we were driving home from his clarinet lesson, D. told me he’d been invited to spend the afternoon with his good friend S, exploring the neighborhood and catching terrain-specific Pokemon, because there’s now a smartphone app for Pokemon that’s very much like the Ingress game we learned about last summer! Since D&S already love to explore the woods in the neighborhood, and they both love video games, I couldn’t imagine a more fun activity for them. They packed up backpacks full of snacks, and filled their water bottles, and spent 5 hours hunting for Pokemon. D. used up his phone charge pretty quickly, but I’m told S. caught quite a few. There were even Pokemon in our neighborhood supermarket! Sometimes the Pokemon appeared inside people’s houses or back yards, so they had to let those go, but I can imagine younger kids actually knocking on people’s doors and asking if they could catch the Pokemon in their houses.

When he was home again later and telling me and J. about the game, a Pokemon appeared in our very dining area, between D’s computer and the printer! It was a level 2, much better than the ones he’d seen earlier. We also realized that the Pokemon team has apparently imported the maps from Ingress, since all of the Ingress sites we’d learned about last summer had Pokemon. What a fun thing game, and they got so much exercise! And the game just came out today – I think it’s going to be hugely popular.

Meanwhile, J. is having a grand time with the latest version of Gemcraft, an old favorite tower defense game, and when he’s at home, D. is playing lots of Xenoblade Chronicles again, so there’s plenty of gaming for me to watch.
