Truckers, by Terry Pratchett. Bromeliad #1. A small group of 4” tall people (“nomes”) are living along a highway near a truck stop, where life is extremely difficult and dangerous – few of them manage to live their natural 10-year lifespan. One of them realizes this cannot go on, so he gets his fellow nomes to hide inside a truck with him to see where else they might go. Suddenly they find themselves living in a department store with something like two thousand other nomes, who have been there for generations and no longer even believe in the Outside. But the store is going to be demolished, and a strange device belonging to the first group of nomes keeps telling them they came from space and were stranded here some 15,000 years ago. Can they ever get home again? The writing style is very amusing, and I’ve been encouraging people to read this for years. The sexism is mildly irritating, but it’s still fun overall.
