The Lost Metal, by Brandon Sanderson. Mistborn Era 2, book 4 (of 4). After the first of these books about Wax and Wayne, set in an Old West world, I expected the others would be more of the same, and the second and third books were not all that different (more urban, though), but this one was. My two favorite characters (the women) did great, too. Definitely worth reading.

So... our friend JC got this one for Christmas, and J's been advising him on what he needs to read first. Obviously he needs to read the other three books in this era, but what else? I now have a fully informed opinion. First, he needs to read the original Mistborn trilogy, or else he'd be confused and probably never get into these. Second, he needs to read Mistborn: Secret History - without having done that, this new book would be both confusing and probably highly annoying, especially for those who've read the original trilogy. And third, he doesn't need to read Elantris and The Emperor's Soul. Having done so would let him recognize a few things in his book, but whatever - he could also have the fun of retrospectively recognizing them if he reads those books later.

After getting a fair amount of work done, I went to the downtown library to collect a bunch of books so I can learn more about Hamilton and the Gettysburg Address. Then I met up with J and DG at the Taphouse for our usual Monday meal. J was lamenting a pair of nasty cat-scratches on his chest - he'd been holding Azalyn and leaned forward to set her down, when the Magic card bag he had over his shoulder swung around and startled her. Oops. It still hurts now, hours later.

Earlier in the day, R. had picked up D. for their Christmas celebration, and upon seeing D. he commented that he (D) had gained weight. He has, but he's still thin, but then R. went on to talk about how he and B. had both started gaining weight around D's age, which I thought was pretty tactless. It turned out that D. had interpreted it much more favorably - R's always been conscious of being short (he was 5'9 as an adult before he "settled," but as a teen he was much shorter), and D. is both taller than that and more athletic-looking, so he concluded that what R. had said was a compliment.

Anyway... I didn't do much else today besides finishing The Lost Metal and watching the first episode of All Creatures Great and Small season 3, the wedding. Also, my new key arrived today, and I can get at my files in that one cabinet now! And another also - I was thinking that Ajani is still pretty sedentary, and maybe I should take him to the vet after all, so I weighed him, and he hasn't lost any weight. So I'll give it a few more days.
