Day 941: Huh
Oct. 17th, 2022 11:53 pmOn Mondays, when J. finishes work, we usually have dinner downtown at the Taphouse with DG, then the two of them go play Magic while I visit the library or do other errands then drive home and get stuff done. Today we were joined by another Magic player, a math grad student from Colombia named N, who is on friendly terms with DG.
I was amused, perplexed, and annoyed by something odd N. said. When he arrived, he asked what we were talking about; it was the Eugene Symphony. He said oh, they're no good. We asked why he thought that, and his reason was that a friend had told him he didn't like it because sometimes they play music that's not the established standard symphony fare. (!!!)
My response was to basically pretend I didn't hear/understand him (he has a rather strong accent) and to start talking enthusiastically about our current composer in residence, a young woman from Puerto Rico.
What a bizarre thing to say. I mean, one might certainly prefer the conventional concert fare, but if the symphony also plays other things it doesn't mean they are "no good"!
