A Closed and Common Orbit, by Becky Chambers. Wow. Just, wow. This book was the second in the Wayfarers series, and very impressive. Profound, even - much more so than the first. And still altogether fun. Several minor characters from the first book are the main characters this time. And since it's about sentient AIs, there were even some fascinating parallels with the new Murderbot book.

Looking back on all the books I've read for the first time this year, I'm going to say that this was probably the best so far, even beating Jo Walton's Tooth and Claw.

Hm, Friday

I spent most of the day with a big sleep deficit, having woken too early due to stress about publishers. Around 10:30 am I got an e-mail from Isabelle, who said Oxford Univ. Press is interested, but as an academic book. I'd certainly like to have my book widely available in bookstores and at an affordable price. On the other hand, it just occurred to me that if it became a regularly assigned text, that could bring in a good income over the years. So I'll hear more from her about what they have in mind.

Much of the day was a blur, during which I finished a figure I was making for my article, then I wrote a blog post so I can share it informally too. I'll put the link in a friends-locked post.

Around 4 pm I took a break and went to our company social hour on Zoom, with five of my coworkers plus our hostess's live-in partner, who we're friendly with. Today we played a game called "Fake Artist Goes to New York," which was definitely fun.

J. and I both napped in the evening, and now my energy level is much better. Also, he had pizza delivered for the three of us, which was great.
