Today we went to a local event I hadn't attended before: Art and the Vineyard. We parked at a further parking lot so we could have a better chance of getting a (free) space, so we walked through Alton Baker Park for a ways before reaching the venue. So many birds today! We saw cedar waxwings (not an everyday occurrence!), lots of Canada geese, a pair of some larger kind of geese with two of their near-grown chicks, ducks of course, and pigeons, a great blue heron, and at least one osprey, which made the pigeons scatter whenever it dove into the canoe pond.

The main reason for going to Art and the Vineyard was so I could get Mary Lowd's new book, Octopus Uprising, but they haven't shipped it yet (and they've changed the name). I bought a different book of hers, a book of urban hikes, the trilogy about Archimedes that I went for, and two Bill Sullivan novels that I went for as well. Meanwhile, J. was looking at pottery, and we ended up with three new mugs and a beautiful shallow bowl, which we bought as our last thing at the event. Next we ate - I had chicken with tabbouli and hummus, and he had a savory crepe with steak and provolone; he also had a cider with quince flavoring and brandy. We looked at some garden art, then we looked at all the regular art. Our favorite was Scott Rubey, who does exceptionally vibrant landscape photography on special aluminum. He especially liked this one of Crater Lake. I also liked work by Hung Pham, a painter, including this one.

And we made an observation: There are three aspects of exposure to the sun that people care about. I don't like its brightness, but J. doesn't care. J. doesn't like its UV rays, which I don't think about at all. And neither of us like it to be too hot, though he tolerates it better than I do.

After we came home, I went for a walk with D's girlfriend's mom in the cemetery again; this time I showed her the red-breasted sapsucker. The chicks' cheeping can be heard from a pretty good distance at this point.
