Mother’s Day
May. 11th, 2014 07:13 pmSo busy! First J. and I went to visit my mom at the memory care place. She was watching Sister Act 2, which has a major character named Rita, which is her own name too, although she didn’t notice until I pointed it out to her. She told me I’m beautiful and that the picture of D. I gave her looks a lot like me. She liked the brownie we gave her, though she said it hurt her teeth, but then she said she would ignore that. Then we went to the eastern end of Pre’s Trail and walked around the canal a bit, saw some delphiniums, and walked back past a massive four-trunked sequoia on the edge of a grassy park. We then drove home, and R. delivered D., along with flowers for me.
Then J. and D. and I went to visit the Raptor Center, where there was an exceedingly friendly black-billed magpie named Miri who followed us around from one end of her large cage to the other, and showed J. lots of sticks that she was adding to her nest. Her tail feathers were irridescent blue with a rainbow-colored patch. Also there were dozens of other beautiful birds, of course. I especially admired the delicate grey plumage of the Northern Harrier hawk. Oh, and another friendly bird I remember from before was one of the vultures, who was extremely interested in observing us up close.
And then we went out for Thai food. Unlike his brother, D. hasn’t had all that much Asian food, and had never used chopsticks before. (I know that chopsticks aren’t authentic for Thai food, but whatever, they’re fun.) D. had chicken satay and tried a bit of J’s yellow curry. I had the sur rong kai, which is a steak dish.
Then we drove home and saw a scruffy-looking fellow who appeared to be in physical distress, so we called 9-1-1, but by the time J. had walked back there after parking, he was gone. I hope he’s doing okay. We met a friendly white cat nearby, then we walked home again. Now we’re just sitting around. Later we’ll watch last week’s episode of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the first episode of some new late-night Batman cartoon.
We fit _so much_ into the day. I’m kind of amazed, considering I’m still sick and at least last night I felt super-depleted. Better today, obviously, but I usually don’t bounce back this quickly, so I bet if I stopped and thought about how I feel, it wouldn’t be that great. Nice to be able to ignore it, though, for now.
