D’s summer break ends tomorrow, as classes start on Thursday. He’s had a pretty intense and glorious time of it, almost entirely on his own initiative, exploring several imaginary (or at least not very ordinary) worlds, with some degree of emphasis on competition, art, and puzzle-solving.

The first half of the summer, he focused on Legend of Zelda games, both playing them and playing their music on his clarinet. He played some or all of eight games: Zelda 1, 2, and 3; Ocarina of Time (on DS); Majora’s Mask, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, and Wind Waker (on the Wii). He’d already played Phantom Hourglass enough to not want to bother with it.

Another major theme for the first half of the summer was American Ninja Warrior, not only watching the show but designing his own training for his future as a contestant, if it’s still around in seven years.

Then, mid-summer, he switched to Yu-Gi-Oh. He watched more than a hundred episodes of Yu-Gi-Oh GX on Hulu and played an impressive amount of PSX and DS versions of it. He also designed numerous Yu-Gi-Oh cards himself, drawing page after page of art and adding stats. About a week and a half ago, too, I reminded him that he did own quite a few Yu-Gi-Oh cards from when he was 8 or so, and he got out the box and started getting excited about building decks.

But then, last Friday, he abruptly switched his passion from Yu-Gi-Oh to Magic: The Gathering, another trading card game for which he already owned enough cards to build decks, and which J. has been playing with some degree of seriousness for years. I am sure if the summer were to last another month, he’d be immersing himself in this new game just as much as he did in the others.

It’s fun to have a kid this age, it really is.
