This morning, in the shower, I was reflecting on the fun of Super Bowl Sunday. Some people care about the game, of course, and others have parties to attend, but for me, the fun is the commercials. Lots of holidays have some creative, participatory element, like designing Halloween costumes, choosing or making gifts, or dyeing Easter eggs, but for the Super Bowl, you get to just relax and enjoy the well-financed work of America’s best paid ad agencies.
This year, my favorite was the Audi ad with the headlights that (accidentally) destroy vampires. I also liked the Betty White ad, though I have no idea what she was selling. D. liked one with a little dog racing in running shoes. We ate Doritos, and we fast-forwarded through the game whenever we could. He’d chosen 27-24 Patriots as the outcome, in a contest run by his band teacher to win Girl Scout cookies, but neither of us cared about the outcome beyond that. I guess I was leaning towards the Patriots too, having noticed a former Duck on the team, but later I learned that the Giants also had a Duck, so, good for them.
