For use when, for example, one starts the day somewhat sick and already worn out. The idea is to maximize endorphins.

Radically lower your expectations for yourself for the day. Figure out the least you can do to be adequate, then do whatever you're comfortable with beyond that and be pleased at how much you're getting done compared with the day's new low standard. If you're not pressed for time, make a point to do something creative, and do to something that's important but not at all urgent.
Live in beauty and good humor. Take the most scenic reasonable route, wherever you go; notice every pretty thing and smile at it. Smile as much as you can. Hum or sing when you're by yourself. Find amusement, not disappointment, in your mistakes and inadequacies. Laugh a lot.
Escape, escape, escape. If your brain's stuck reviewing some stressful events, put something more compelling in there. JA used to come up with lots of good logic puzzles; there must be quite a few on-line. Or if you're just plain uncomfortable, engage your senses elsewhere, in a favorite movie or book, preferrably set in a very different place or time. Look forward to this all day, and be sure to follow through when you get the chance.

Or in my case, distance yourself from the discomfort by spending the whole day thinking up tips for the situation, testing them, and planning to write them down.

This evening we went outside to see the total lunar eclipse. The moon was a sliver, and I ran back in for the camera. (J. has taken successful moon pictures, so I wanted to try.) Two minutes later... they'd seen the moon disappear, and I hadn't. It was so fast! I'll probably go watch for its return in a few minutes, unless the clouds are back. Then... escape into Fitzwilliam Darcy: Gentleman (Book 1), which I'm rereading. (I like to reread some books immediately, the better to savor what I rushed through the first time.) I also printed a long manuscript today, which I'm very much looking forward to. (Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] abbzug!)
