Back on the merry-go-round -- that is, first day at work after my vacation. Certainly an easy day. First, the 2 p.m. meeting had been cancelled; then around 3:15 I heard someone asking someone else if they were going to a party that I realized I should have been invited to. So I went and got myself invited, and at 4 p.m. I drove over to the campus and found it. The party was to celebrate that $4 million grant I mentioned a few times in September. I expected Zoe to be at the party and hoped to meet Bill the Economist; actually I didn't know a single person there when I arrived, and neither Zoe nor Bill came, though eventually there were four others whom I did know.

I tried caviar. It's unimpressive on crackers that I would otherwise have disliked, and they didn't have any others, so I tried eating a bit with my fingertips, and that was okay. Also I had chips and salsa, a mini-quiche, and a potsticker, and Hill handed me a cup of champagne. (I ended up breaking the open container law and bringing most of it home to R.) I talked with a woman named Debbie whose kids went to the French school and with another woman named Anna whose dissertation will evaluate an anti-bullying curriculum. After that, I renewed my UO library books and passed this very fine tree:
