Any Battlestar: Galactica fans out there?

I see they're having a Battlestar: Galactica movie tonight. I didn't watch the most recent season of the show, so I don't understand the context of this movie. Did the show resolve the storyline, such that this movie focuses on a smaller story but there won't be a new season of the show? Or is the movie just something that fills in part of the story while fans bide their time waiting for the new season? And does the movie's story happen after the most recent season, or is it backstory of some kind?
