More HVAC details

Today I met an engineer who does all the specs and bidding for heat pump installations and replacement, and we looked at my house and its existing system and discussed what needs to be done. Unfortunately, the space for the indoor part of my current system was designed too narrowly; they now make the equipment wider. Also, after 30+ years of cats, etc., in the house, it’s high time to get the ducts cleaned. I’ll have to do tons of work to get ready for that, especially as there are some ducts that aren’t particularly accessible now, like the one under my bed and a possible one beneath the livingroom bookcases.

After that, J and I did some errands together then sat outside eating a wedding anniversary dinner. Unfortunately, Azalyn ate the wax paper that had been under my lasagna – I hope her little digestive system can cope with it.

That sounds like it's going to be messy. How big is it all?

Well, the outdoor unit is sized at "two tons," but it's the easy part to change. The indoor unit is an "air handler" or something like that, with an electric furnace, and they'd have to build a sheet metal thing to fit it into the space available, apparently, because now they're wider than they were when the house was built. And then there's the existing ductwork, which needs to be repaired (in one case) and cleaned - there are either eight or nine ducts. (My house is 1152 square feet.) I had been told he would send us the bid last night, but we didn't get it yet.

They had to do some sheet metal adjustments for our new gas furnace. Those guys are pretty good at that though. It's doable for you I hope.

I think so - I will have to cut down extra blackberries outside because the current heat pump is too close to the dryer vent, though.

Wow, that's huge! I must read up on how those things work.

My understanding is that it's basically a cooling system that can run itself in reverse to provide heat in cooler weather.

That does sound like a lot of works to get the ducts cleaned. We need to do that too.

Right - now the trick is to convince myself I can do both the things that have to happen for the heat pump and the things that have to happen for the ducts in time for when they'd come to do it, which would be next week or the week after. Do I have that much energy? Hard to say!

Hm, not easily, but on Wednesday I think D will come help J move the last two bookcases into my hallway, so at least my house won't be quite so full of stacks of books! Also I bought a cart, which I need to assemble, to help me store stuff temporarily in J's garage.
