I did such lovely things today! It was simply beautiful outside – warm, upper 70s, and my first big errand was to walk across downtown to buy books. First I went to the Daffodil romantasy store, but the only person who knows how the books are organized is the owner, and she was away. Still, I’m pretty sure they didn’t have the book I needed (for J’s employer’s book club). They did have it across the street at Smith Family, our largest local bookstore, as well as another Hugo nominee and our online book club’s May book. I walked maybe 18 blocks without sciatica problems, although I could tell my back was getting tired – at least it was nice and flat. I also visited the Japanese-American internment memorial downtown, since there was a stone for Sōseki, the author of last month’s online book club selection, and I photographed it to share. (His granddaughter lived here.)

Then in the early evening, I attended the first event of this year’s Musicking conference. The drive there was lovely, with drifts and swirls of cottonwood fluff in the air, lit by the almost-setting sun – they looked like cherry blossom petals! Tonight’s event was billed as featuring this year’s special guest, Capella Artemisia, a medieval-style women’s choir from Italy, but when I got there I saw a young cellist I know all set up to play. It turns out the event was a rehearsal for Friday’s concert of our university’s Musicking ensemble, in which members of the Capella could give feedback (and most of what they had to say addressed the singers’ pronunciation of Italian words). I stayed for the first two hours of the event; almost everyone there was part of the group, and only maybe five or six of us were a real audience. Since I’m unlikely to attend the actual concert on Friday, this was a fun way to hear much of the music and learn more at the same time.

As soon as I left the building, I saw a message from J. It sounds like his mom is interested in visiting Quebec or Prince Edward Island with him, so I started researching that. She vastly prefers to travel by train, and Quebec would be much more reasonable for that than PEI.
