Resolutions: January report

As I posted in late December, my resolutions for 2025 are to make some headway on my backlog of books I wish that I'd read but haven't been able to get myself to read (or where I stopped in the middle and haven't yet resumed), and also to try a few of my backlog of Steam games. (And maybe to make headway on my 2024 resolution to eat more lentils!) Here's how I did in January.

The book I chose from my stack of 12 was The Dragon Republic, and I managed to get it finished by the 15th of the month! Go me! My book for February (this is a public commitment thing) is The Name of the Rose.

I tried several Steam games in my backlog of games I own, but it turned out my laptop wasn't powerful enough to play them. My new laptop arrived today, so I should do better in February. Meanwhile, I figured I should play Undertale, so I bought it and played it for... 55 minutes. Well, that's not nothing. I think it was three sessions.

(Also, I did eat lentil spaghetti, once.)

What kind of new lappy did you get? I am happy for you. G. needs a new one. Where did you buy it?

This one is called an Acer Nitro V 15, which is actually a gaming laptop, which I don't really need per se, but it's similar to one that J has had for years. I hope the keyboard will feel similar to J's keyboard. It has a 10-key, which I value, and lots of places to plug things in. The reviews online seemed to think that it's great except for gaming! So we'll see. I bought it on Amazon because it was much cheaper than Newegg.

Oh to have a 10 key on a laptop is huge! Well if it is made for gaming you should have a lot of memory! I never heard of Newegg. I will have to look that up!

Newegg is a major supplier of computer things, and they even have a tool that lets you specify what you're looking for in a laptop, then lists a bunch of options. Their list doesn't really cover everything I care about, but they do have lots of options.

Great, I hope so! The only real advice I have is that lots of laptops have only 8 GB of RAM, and if you're going to have many tabs or programs open at once, or you want to do something that takes a lot of "oomph" to do, then it's better to have 16 GB of RAM. Also I find it's helpful to read people's reviews - I care how loud a laptop gets, for example, and that screening tool on Newegg doesn't have anything like that.
