MLK Day

Today I got an email from my friend E, who asked how I was going to celebrate, and I knew she didn't mean the inauguration. So I decided, sure, I should go ahead and start the library book I have by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., even though StoryGraph tells me I'm already in the middle of a dozen books. It's interesting so far!

Also - J and I finally used the chainsaw on the oak branches from the ice storm a year ago, and by the end of the week I should be able to get the rest of them into my yard debris bin. Then we met up downtown and had dinner with D and DG, before the three of them went off to play Magic. They're going to have Magic events for four of the next five weekends, and they need to do lots of advance planning. I went for a walk in the dark when I got home, with the distant lights on the hills looking magical as they always do on winter nights, but my hands were so cold even with gloves on that I came home early.

MLK day is definitely something to celebrate. I'm ignoring that other thing as much as I can.

Shifting tree branches is hard work. It sounds as though you're making good progress though.

Oh, these are just the leftover parts from the branches - they've been in a pile beside the driveway for an entire year, waiting for the chainsaw. Even so, J kept thinking we could cut them with the loppers instead. I certainly can't "lop" through 2-3" of wood.

I think you are braver than me to walk home in the dark. And it's so cold here right now I don't want to walk anywhere! It's weird how cold goes right through gloves.

Yes, and I can't put my hands in my pockets because if I trip on the sidewalk (since tree roots damage the sidewalk and lift it up, which is hard to see in the dark), I need my hands out to fall on. Half the time I just walk in the street anyway, since it seems safer. But tripping on things is the real risk in the dark - I'm not particularly afraid of scary people because anyone outside in the dark right now is just a neighbor.

Maybe you could bring a little flashlight. Old sidewalks yes,so tricky!

I've seen a lot of other people using flashlights, but that's not really my thing. Maybe it will become my thing? If it really looks problematic, I use the flashlight on my cell phone.

I always forget my flashlight has a phone LOL. I do use that too once in a while and that's the best idea. I use a real flashlight every morning when I get Zilly out and get her biz picked up at 6:00am so that just came to my mind first. I am so old, ha hah!

My "old" flashlight is also a phone, one that never had phone service but I used it for taking pictures sometimes. I'm not sure if I have a real flashlight around here...
