Resolutions
Dec. 31st, 2024 01:45 pmFor 2024, I had what I thought was an easy resolution – I would eat lentils more often. I like lentils. I bought lentils and found some new recipes. I did have spaghetti made from lentils a few times, but I never actually got around to cooking some lentils from scratch. Instead, I pretty much ate the same things every day, which was convenient and reasonably nutritious but didn’t encourage much lentil-innovation.
For this year, though, I have a new idea that should – in theory – be much easier. What do I actually manage to do, reliably? I read books. So… I am planning to read some books that I’ve been procrastinating, in some cases for years. I collected together about 35 books that either I think I ought to read but haven’t ever wanted to start, or bothered to start, or that I started but never finished. Many of them are probably quite entertaining to read, although a few of them I’m kind of dreading. I chose the 12 that I most think I should read, and my plan is to read one a month. In the odd-numbered months, I should read the one I least want to read, and in the even-numbered months I can read any of the 12 that I haven’t read yet. If I get at least 100 pages in (or I really cannot stand it) and don’t want to finish, then I should substitute another of the original 35 books. I will probably make a public commitment, too.
Also, once a month I am going to start one of the many Steam games I own that I haven’t yet played. And ideally, once a month I’ll have some lentil spaghetti, or lentils in another form.
For January, I am going to try to finish The Dragon Republic by R.F. Kuang. It’s a stressful book. My neighbor lent it to me many months ago, and I stopped reading it around page 82 of 654. Wish me luck!
