I did two very fun things today! The first was a reading by one of our creative writing professors, Mat Johnson, who read a chapter from his new book, Invisible Things. It's science fiction (and allegory), and from the part we heard, likely to be quite fun. I think the author identifies as a Black person who is commonly believed to be white. I bought the book afterwards (and was tempted by some of his other books).

Then I zoomed downtown to get a library book that had arrived for me, then went to Market of Choice for a few groceries. Then I bought gasoline. The computer in my car told me at that point I had only two miles of driving range left, but when I got home and calculated it, it was more like 30. I'm glad I only need to fill my tank every three months.

So then I made and ate dinner and rushed back out to hear the university's wind ensemble perform Gustav Holst's The Planets, which was a multimedia event with a slide show illustrating the various Roman gods with text descriptions and arts, and then an image of the relevant planet. At the end, for Neptune, there was a cool choir part happening above and behind us.

I cut it pretty close - I left home at 7:15 pm, parked at the first spot I found within three blocks of the music school, and made it into the ticket line at 7:30 exactly. The concert hall was packed! I had no idea what was essentially a band concert would be so popular - the university symphony concerts I've attended have never been anywhere near this full. I did get a seat, thankfully, and settled into it just as the performance started.

What a fun day! The air was quite smoky so I wore a mask all the time, except inside my house, so it was great that there were cool things to do indoors. I'd sent all the current pieces of my grant proposal to JA last night, and of course she didn't turn them around instantaneously, which meant that today I could just have fun. Tomorrow or Friday I hope I can take a walk, if the smoke clears before the rain starts on Friday afternoon.
