Orwell's Roses, by Rebecca Solnit. This is a cool book - an exploration of George Orwell's life and thought that comes back repeatedly to his love for gardening. It's an interconnected set of essays, by which I mean it's not linear, although the connections with Orwell's life are roughly chronological. I learned interesting things, and it was a pleasure. The overall message is that political activism should always be linked to a sense of what is good, what one is working toward, and that it's healthy and wise to enjoy life's pleasures as part of one's more serious work.
