The Latinist, by Mark Prins. This novel is set in academia, specifically, an Oxford Classics department. Tess is finishing her Ph.D., and her advisor, Chris, thinks he's fallen in love with her and is therefore justified in derailing her job search so she'll be stuck with him. We alternate between her point of view and his, and eventually we realize that Tess isn't great either, but she's way better than Chris. A minor character, Florence, is a fabulous translator and we find ourselves rooting for her. I was surprised just now to see that it's considered a thriller, but, I guess? It's pretty readable, but I wouldn't seriously recommend it to others.

Today reached 98F, as predicted, and I woke with a headache too. I'd had this idea that it would be less bright and hot maybe by 6 pm, and then I would venture forth to do a variety of errands, but as it turned out, the "less bright and hot" didn't happen until 7:30 pm. I went out to buy cat food (everyone seems to be out of Ajani's favorite flavor) and then to my office to deliver some stuff and take some stuff away. There wasn't time for me to go to either library, as they were both closing at 8 pm, but that's less urgent.

After I got home, we rushed about trying to fill the yard debris bin before dark, since tomorrow morning's the bi-weekly pickup. We did get a bit into ours, then I helped our neighbor wrestle some blackberry vines into his. By then it was 9:30 pm and too dark to do any more yardwork.

Tomorrow we expect 100F, so I'll have to be even more patient with the brightness and the heat, but with luck my headache will be gone and it will be less important?
