Tess is finishing her Ph.D., and her advisor, Chris, thinks he's fallen in love with her and is therefore justified in derailing her job search so she'll be stuck with him. We alternate between her point of view and his, and eventually we realize that Tess isn't great either, but she's way better than Chris. A minor character, Florence, is a fabulous translator and we find ourselves rooting for her. I was surprised just now to see that it's considered a thriller, but, I guess? It's pretty readable, but I wouldn't seriously recommend it to others.
