I had to wake up a bit "early" today so as not to miss the guest speaker at the Bach Festival book club, author James R. Gaines. He used to be editor of major magazines, and now he does book projects that interest him, such as the clash of worldviews that happened when Bach met Frederick the Great. Now that I'm aware of him, I'm especially interested in his book about the 1950s, which he sees not as a time of conformity but as a time when a few creative individuals started major movements - gay rights, civil rights (I think), and Rachel Carson's contributions to the environmental movement.

Later today I finally moved nine moderately heavy boxes from my livingroom to J's garage. I wish I'd remembered my plan to buy a wagon or cart! I was pretty tired after that, so I rested a bit with a delightful book, then made spaghetti, and then went out and filled the yard debris bin by whacking down more blackberry vines. So I am really quite tired now!

A Psalm for the Wild-Built, by Becky Chambers. I completely adored this, with one tiny reservation. Why must the main character regularly punctuate their speech with the f-word? I mean, sure, it was natural enough for them to do, but with that decision the author decided to keep her book out of public school curricula. Otherwise it would be quite a desirable book for young people to read, I would think. Anyway, I should definitely buy a copy, and I should get all the future books in this "Monk and Robot" series, and I have strongly encouraged J's book club to adopt it for June, as it's just what they're looking for.
