A Conspiracy of Kings, by Megan Whelan Turner, the fourth book in the original Queen's Thief series. We have the fifth to read next, now, though. I read it aloud to J, and we liked it. I remembered very little from my previous reading.

Weeks ago, I wanted to do our annual Book Club Movie Night with the old black-and-white film Born Yesterday, because it's reminiscent of a certain political comeuppance that I'd like to see. We scheduled it for a patriotic date near the Fourth of July, but our Zoom host fell asleep and napped through the designated time. I rescheduled it for two weeks later (tonight), but a few days ago I realized I just wasn't feeling it. Sitting around indoors watching an old movie is a fine thing for fall and winter, but not really compatible with warm summer evenings, when we all want to be outside. (Our usual Book Club Movie Night involves watching a movie outdoors together.)

So I e-mailed the group with a new plan - we'll reschedule the movie in the fall, and tonight we had a brief online chat for those who can't get together in person, then I hosted a socially distanced conversation in J's yard. For the first event, it was our host LB, AF, and BHW, then in my yard it was T and BHW, who walked over to continue the conversation. I served beverages but not snacks.

AF had mentioned seeing the comet at the reservoir - the location J. and I hadn't gone to several days ago - and although J. had work to get done, I talked him into a quick drive over there. It's just five minutes away, but I'm not convinced my car would willingly go up the hill. Lots of people were there in the dark, nicely distanced, and once we were there I did spot the comet. Now I know where it is, and I can see it from my driveway and the sidewalk to my front door. When I got home, I asked D. if he wanted to come outside and see it through the binoculars, but nah, he wasn't interested and it turns out he'd seen it several days ago on a walk with S. (He continues with his blasé reputation.)
