If I hadn't been on a walk to photograph the view 1000 steps north of my house today, I wouldn't have been able to raise my voice and warn a boy (about age 6) that he really did need to stop his bike. He and his mom and sister were all riding on 39th, approaching Donald St., and his mom cautioned the two of them to slow down, but I guess it was pretty fun zipping down the hill, gathering speed, and she was being ignored. I'd just crossed the street myself and knew a car was coming down the much bigger hill, and in horror I called out, "WHOA. CAR IS COMING!" He paid attention to me, this strange woman half-yelling at him, and brought himself quickly to a stop, just in time.

So, thanks for giving me a reason to be at the right place and the right time, dear readers!

It's a bit more effort to go north or west from my house, since they both involve hills. To the north, you go over a hill and partway down the other side. Here's the view looking north, from 1000 steps north of my house. It's the Tamarack Wellness Center, where they have a yoga school and a heated pool for people with movement disabilities. It used to be an Easter Seal school.

If we zoom in between the two trees in the center, you can see one of the taller buildings downtown. The hill behind it is Skinner Butte, named for the founder of our town (Eugene Skinner) - that's where he set up his homestead, near the river, back in 1846.
