Nighttime outdoor office
Aug. 29th, 2018 11:14 pmThis evening I decided to start writing the first full draft of the new paper G. invited me to write with him, and I decided J's porch was the place to do it. It was already dark, and although I had the porch light on, there were - surprisingly - no moths or craneflies, or really, any other living creature besides myself and my companion Theo, who curled up in the other chair and began rolling about happily.
I took one break when D. called to get a ride home, and I took another when J. called to say he was driving home after playing Magic downtown. J. mentioned he could see the moon, but from my angle it was just about to rise over the forested ridge to the east - I could only see its glow on a thin horizontal line of clouds. A minute or two later, he was pulling into the driveway, and I could see a proper sliver of the moon, and a minute or two after that I realized that I could now see the entire moon (several days past full). Then I made a surprising discovery... if I held my head very still, I could actually see the moon move! From my perspective, it was more a matter of watching the silhouette of tree branches move in position relative to the moon, but it was definitely something I could notice. Woo hoo!
