A full Friday
Jun. 1st, 2018 11:55 pmToday was full, and I got no work done – I guess I'm saving it all up for the weekend. First I went to G's lab to see Amber, my classmate who is now a professor in Switzerland; she was talking about personality-words in African languages.
I stopped by my office briefly, then I went and bought this month's book club book, Jack Kerouac's On the Road, an American classic I've never read. I'm enthusiastic about improving my cultural literacy with this one.
Next I went to campus for the Holi celebration (the ones where people exuberantly toss colored powders on each other), but I was an hour early so I got library books – then had to drive home for my reading glasses – then J. was ready for the Holi event so we went to that. We just observed from a safe distance, but now that we've seen it, we may come back next year wearing white shirts, for the fun. (There were definitely some participants around my age.)
Then, even though D's not in high school band this year, I went for the concluding concert to see what wacky things the graduating seniors did with the concert they get to plan. Our friend C. conducted his own arrangement of Cold Play songs, wearing an all-white suit, with smoke billowing from the piano, and with his parents setting off confetti poppers over the stage. (His mom's a law professor, ha – nice that she went along with the antics.)
I read On the Road during the set changes and after I got home. Our hero has made his way from New York to Denver, San Francisco, and now Los Angeles. Where will he go next?
