A great sense of relief
Apr. 24th, 2017 10:29 pmToday I went to the high school and got D. dropped from the spring term of calculus. Whew! Now his school day ends at 12:24 p.m., but he still has five classes. (The actual school day ends at 3:30 p.m.)
The issue is that our local university, which he plans to attend, has an automatic scholarship of $6,000 a year for students with a minimum SAT score, which he's achieved, and a minimum GPA of 3.8. His current GPA is 3.816, so he needs to stay at 3.8 for the rest of his classes, and getting caught up on calculus was a big risk. Assuming he can maintain at least a B in physics, he should be fine, as he gets an A or A- in all of his literature, history, social science, Japanese, and band classes. A+ in band, rather. The total expense for students who don't live on campus is around $11,000 a year plus textbooks, so $6,000 would be great.)
(If the GPA stuff doesn't have any meaning to you: "GPA" is grade point average, and an "A" in a class is worth 4 points, "B" is worth 3, etc. A 3.8 GPA is a bit better than an A- average. Some teachers give an A- for anything below 94% correct on an exam, while some are more generous.)
Then this afternoon his girlfriend (who also gets done at 12:24 p.m.) accidentally stepped on his glasses and broke the frame. We are hoping the dispensary will come up with some good alternative frames in the morning, as they want to go see Your Name tomorrow too. (Maybe this will convince him to keep his glasses on!)
