This evening I went to a concert by the Delgani String Quartet, playing three pieces with fugues. First there was a fine Haydn piece, then Ives, then Beethoven, which was beautiful and became technically very impressive. I'm not a fan of Ives. I also talked with a very outgoing and lovely woman named Grace, who's affiliated with the university's school of music, and a composer named John. Grace and John were following each of the pieces by reading the sheet music. I asked, and she said it does help make the music more engaging - another tip for how to not have one's mind wander quite so much; another clue for what makes "narrative" immersion different for music and text.

Last week the weather forecast called for 1-3" of snow on both Thursday and Friday this week. A few days ago, the forecast was updated to 1" on Wednesday only, which is tomorrow. About two hours ago, tiny flurries started to fall, visible only really right beneath the street lamp, but at this point they're adding up to maybe an eighth of an inch. I know that D. would like winter break to last one more day - we'll see what this baby-snow amounts to by 6 a.m. when they decide.

Spencer Butte, as in my icon, has been covered with snow for the last couple of days, but it's 2000' tall, whereas our elevation at my house is only 535', compared with 400' downtown. But there are plenty of houses at the 900' level, which are the main ones they consider for school closure.

(D's clarinet teacher had been alarmed last week by the Thursday/Friday forecast, so she asked us to switch his lesson to Wednesday...)
