Today was a fine day, quite warm - 87. I was happy to get my car back; they think the problem may be solved by replacing the timing belt, the tensioner, and probably also the water pump, all of which make logistical sense to do at the same time. The car certainly runs well at the moment, and it was great to get it back. I have to watch the oil level carefully until I take it back for more repairs, which will probably be Monday.

Then came D's clarinet lesson, which I always enjoy listening to. His teacher uses great metaphors. Today she compared the brisk trill used in Telemann to a "scared chicken," complete with her own imitation of such a chicken, and she advised him to go up the chromatic scale like a snowplow in the McKenzie Pass, in order to avoid squeaks.

I spent most of the evening sitting on Jonathan's porch with him, just soaking in the heat and gazing at the gardens and trees while he watched some of the Magic Pro Tour on his phone. At one point a hummingbird appeared over the fence and made a chittering sound in my direction, probably looking for the feeder, which was off in the kitchen awaiting a refill. The bird was probably just expressing concern that I was sitting near where the feeder should be, but I took it as a scolding and a prompt to go make the nectar, which I did, and now they can be happy again. The crocosmias which they'd been frequenting in the back yard are no longer in bloom, so they'll be glad for the nectar.
