Tonight was our neighborhood book club meeting, and this time we had all read the book (Isabel Allende's Island Beneath the Sea, about colonial Haiti and New Orleans). We had a great discussion about the book itself, then a grand time talking about bigger issues like slavery, the lives of women, religion, etc., and then we talked about ourselves and the stories of our neighborhood. At this point I've probably lived here the longest, so I had some history that others had wondered about, and it was neat to hear the others' perspectives. And I met yet another neighbor, along with the partner of our hostess (some sort of professor) and their two large poodlish dogs.

It was quite energizing! Next time we're reading The Boys in the Boat and then watching a film clip by Lena Wertmuller of the Olympic event it features.
