I had in mind that I wanted to go to this annual event, which I hadn’t really been aware of before, because one of the authors for D’s mentorship has an artist wife who usually participates, and I’m interested in her work. She wasn’t there this time, but I had a lot of fun! I ended up buying 16 books, of which at least 4 will be gifts. I bought five novels from two of D’s mentors (not the one with the artist-wife; I already have most of his fiction). I bought three novels from some guy whose books looked interesting, and one from a random woman who struck up a conversation with me, although I’m not a fan of Arthurian stuff and that’s what hers is. I bought a four-pack of local history for the Oregon coast, where I was born. I bought an essay collection from the local weekly newspaper columnist who’s a fascinating Mennonite farmer/mom. And I bought a history for a different local area from a woman I had vaguely known when I was a teenager, and a birding memoir from a guy I had vaguely known when I was an older teenager, because we had office desks near each other in the UO student union.

The vaguely known woman led to one of the best conversations – I introduced myself as having been a student of her husband (my junior high band teacher), and also mentioned that I’d gone to school with her son, who had dated my best friend in 8th grade. It turned out the other customer she was having a conversation with had been that son’s first wife. She was kind of dumbstruck and wondered if the two of us had come in together. I also had a great conversation with a woman I’d worked with 15-20 years ago, one of the local quilters. I did some Holiday Market shopping, too – we have great local craftspeople. I can’t really mention most of it, because they were gifts, but I bought myself a pretty necklace:

Then I went and watched J. finish winning his afternoon Magic draft tournament, and then we went to buy him a new phone, since his has been problematic since he when he dropped it on asphalt on the Fourth of July. He’s having fun playing with it now. We also went out for Thai food, then started putting up his Christmas lights. What a festive day!
