Hallmark movie tropes
Aug. 29th, 2014 10:45 pmSo both yesterday and today I watched Hallmark movies – yesterday’s was Class, and today’s was, I think, A Crush on You. Then, a few weeks ago, I watched that one where they were in a hurricane in Puerto Rico. So, based on this great authority I’ve obtained by watching three whole films, I can make these sweeping generalizations about today’s fluffy romantic movie:
- Today’s young woman wants not only the man of her dreams, but also the career of her dreams.
- Her talents have been underappreciated, but she’s got them, whether fully developed or still in the rough. She can do it all, if only the right people believe in her.
- The man of her dreams is probably an artist, a philanthropist, or an all-around do-gooder, but he’ll have to make (or has already made) some difficult choices to get him on this path.
- If she’s a single mom, he’ll also be the perfect dad for her son (it’s a boy, because he needs a man in his life), and they’ll have a strong friendship independent of his relationship with the mom.
- The beautiful-but-shallow sidekick of either sex will turn out to be a true friend who will, in a pinch, do the right thing.
- And let’s not forget the makeover.
