Friday this-and-that
May. 9th, 2014 08:04 pmPositive e-mails: A scientist at work I’ve never talked with (she’s in Albuquerque) sent me an encouraging e-mail. Then, later, H. sent me a nice photo of himself and his wife at Machu Picchu.
I invested a whole lot of time into the e-cigarette proposal. It’s an interesting cognitive puzzle – people naturally compare e-cigarettes to real cigarettes, whereas for teens and young adults, the proper comparison should be with no cigarettes. That’s more complex than either/or, so it’s more cognitive work. Online, there are a whole lot of huffy comments from people who have used e-cigarettes to quit smoking, therefore e-cigarettes are 100% great, and they don’t want to wrap their heads around this broader issue.
We went to D’s future high school for a spaghetti dinner, then we wandered around the school from one end to the other, including the famous quarter-mile main corridor. So much purple. We saw three groups of our friends, and we watched the robotics exhibit. They had two big, mobile robots: One could release and scoop up a large blue ball, and the other could launch frisbees through a target. If I were going to high school, that’s where I’d be, in robotics club.
