Positive reinforcement!
Aug. 10th, 2013 10:39 pmToday was D’s first full-scale Magic tournament (as opposed to a store pre-release event or a little 8-person draft). This one was a “standard” tournament to win a trip to Ireland for a pro tour event in October. The “standard” format is one where you construct a deck in advance, and D. applied himself to that with care. He designed a red-white aggro deck, and he borrowed a bunch of expensive cards from R’s girlfriend’s son and from J. We had fun play-testing his deck the last several days, and he talked strategy with J. a bunch also. He also had dreams about the tournament both last night and the night before.
Today was the big day. D. got up early and stood around, literally trembling with excitement, until J. picked him up and drove downtown. J. doesn’t enjoy building decks in advance all that much, and he particularly doesn’t enjoy buying expensive singles to complete the decks, so he was happy that a friend lent him a deck outright (though he didn’t get to practice with it). They both won their first rounds! D. lost the next two, although when I visited them in the afternoon he was winning the fourth, and he ended up 4-4 for the day. J. was 4-0 when I visited and ended up 6-2, which was 13th place (out of 170+ players).
D's personal aspiration for the day was to make the Top 8 so he could win a playmat – his is nice but larger than they usually are, so he wanted a smaller one. He finished 65th, alas... but... then he won the raffle! And the prize was a playmat from June’s Las Vegas event, which is super-cool-looking and goes for up to $100 on e-bay!
What a successful day!
