One more step forward
Feb. 8th, 2011 10:10 pmToday was something of a mini-milestone, in terms of my degree: I did my dissertation proposal “defense.” I’d given them my proposal back in December, and today I presented it in a PowerPoint then got their feedback. I felt apprehensive about it yesterday, even after I finished writing up the script of what I would say while showing my PowerPoint, but then I decided to frame it to myself not as a “pass/fail” event but rather as an opportunity to get the thoughtful help of interesting people.
I actually slept well, and I was comfortable and ready by 4 p.m. Everyone on my committee is quite nice, and they seemed interested in and enthusiastic about my topic. I “passed” unanimously and have two instructions from my committee: Azim wants me to pursue a very diverse sample for the Web survey, and Mark wants me to include more on narrative and motivation in my final paper (which shouldn’t be hard, since my prelim paper was 175 pages on that very topic).
And as I expected, now I feel much more relaxed and less pressured, with both the grant proposal and the dissertation proposal behind me. Time to first regroup, then head forth into new activities!
