Persuasion, revisited
Feb. 23rd, 2010 12:33 amToday I was telling
fractal9091 about watching last year's new version of Persuasion again. It's one of Austen's less cheerful novels: Our heroine begins the book unhappy (her own fault) and becomes progressively miserable until finally the man she loves reveals that he (still) loves her too, and then everything is great.
fractal9091 is not a big Austen fan, so I mentioned that Anthony Head (Giles on Buffy) plays the father. He suggested I just watch Buffy instead.
Which brought me to a striking realization: The classic, pivotal line from the male lead in Persuasion – "You pierce my soul" – would come across so differently if uttered by a male lead in Buffy.
Maybe those people doing [Austen + zombies | sea monsters] should redo Persuasion as a vampire story.
