"...science, even pushed to its limits, always remains at a distance from action. Science is fragmentary, incomplete; it progresses slowly and is never finished; life cannot wait. Theories that are meant to promote living and acting are therefore compelled to run ahead of science and complete it prematurely. They are possible only if the demands of practice and vital necessities, such as we feel without any clear perception, push thought ahead of what science allows us to confirm. Thus religions, even the most rational and secularized, cannot and will never be able to dispense with a very special sort of speculation that, while having the same objects as science itself, could never be properly scientific: in it, the obscure intuitions of sensation and sentiment often take the place of logic."

R. did the Ask an Expert Garden Show on the radio again, co-hosting this time. I was pretty skeptical after the last one that this would be worth his time, but today was so much better. The previous one had seemed like a couple of pumped up guys trying to fill up air space, with R. adding bits here and there. Today he seemed to do most of the talking, in a very informative and personable manner, and they got more callers than they usually do.

I went to the Holiday Market, which is Saturday Market moved indoors. Lots of tie-dye and faerie art, of course, but I made some good purchases. I bought a neat photograph/art piece entitled "Sanctuary," by the wife of a guy who used to work at ORI; I should photograph it and post it. Later, we watched Oregon State blow out Wazzu, 52-17 with seven interceptions. Oregon State's improving season is something of a consolation prize, given that the Ducks had come so close to the national championship game.

This evening I might watch Ladies in Lavender (set in Cornwall) or re-watch Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, but it would be good to read too. Update 11:34 p.m.: Both movies seemed enticing, but I ended up reading a bunch of Good Omens.
