It's the 100th anniversary of Carson's birth, and I've been remiss in following the Rachel Carson Online Book Club, and in telling you all about it. Let us get caught up now, though. Each week, the book club has readings with discussion moderated by scholars who are well known in environmental or ecocritical circles. By month:
  • April: Silent Spring

  • May: Courage for the Earth

  • June: Always, Rachel

  • July: Under the Sea-Wind

  • August: The Edge of the Sea

  • September: Lost Woods

  • October: The Sea Around Us

  • November: The Sense of Wonder

My plan: Review the discussions to date; start doing the readings in June or July, and continue through to the end. Anyone want to join me?

A good friend of [livejournal.com profile] earthrider, also known to [livejournal.com profile] fractal9091 and [livejournal.com profile] paul19223b, is Rachel Gathercole, whose first book, The Well-Adjusted Child: The Social Benefits of Homeschooling, comes out on June 8th. Congratulations to her!

Ever so handy. One can take lots of notes and watch The Incredible Mr. Limpet and two, count 'em two, Pooh movies. I say this without blushing.

The 'Apple Blossom' rose bush collapsed across the driveway today, weighted down with buds and a light morning rain. Some neighbors cut away a third to a half of it before R. could get home from work to save it, but it still has thousands of buds and should still be pretty. Next year: Anchor it better.
