In the library, in the rain
Sep. 17th, 2004 09:59 pm"Work on Papers Day" actually happened today, and being in the Knight Library at the university is really cool between terms. I sat in the main quiet area, in a back corner; I had my choice of tables and took a whole one with a nice view of the pioneer cemetery. The tall windows let me see the full length of the trees outside, which were swaying in the rainstorm, and the art deco lamps were fun to look at to rest my eyes between pages. It felt like I had the place to myself, and it was great to enjoy the rain while working. I mostly worked on the cost inventory for the study we're doing with Columbia University. I resisted the temptation to look at the truly interesting books, though I did stretch my legs twice by getting up to fetch useful books. It's really my very favorite work thing, to be in the library playing "scholar."
Afterwords, I picked up some noodle soup (kimchee udon) at Hana's, the Japanese-Korean restaurant between the campus and the hospital, then came home and ate it while watching the end of a Cybill episode and the first half of a show about conquests of the Roman Republic, which mostly focused on the games and slavery. Afterwards, I was trying to find a book for the weekend's recreational reading; mostly I wanted Darkover Landfall but I haven't seen my copy of it for years. I then looked for the Cold Comfort Farm my sister had given me recently, and finally it occurred to me that the TV show was an excellent lead-in to rereading Two for the Lions, the Falco novel I've read least recently of the first 13 or so. I had also discovered last night that my Canadian supplier of Falco novels had acquired The Accused early! Lately they'd been coming out in paperback in September or even October, but they say they got this one in July... and I'd been waiting all this while... I order them in Canada because they get the British editions, about a year before U.S. publication. If you ever want to do that sort of thing, check out the new release lists at White Dwarf/Dead Write Books, a bookstore in the Vancouver metro area, or rather a pair of them, one for sci fi/fantasy and one for mysteries. Ask for Walter.
