JG, my coworker and nearest office-neighbor, has twin daughters who had outgrown their play structure, playhouse, and work bench, and today, lucky D. inherited these wonderful toys. In the late morning, we all went to her house, which is on a winding, forested road not far from here, set on nearly 1-1/2 acres of douglas firs, pines, big-leaf maples, madrones, and considerable lawn. The house is a historic home from the 1920s, with really neat features, including beautiful and ample windows, hexagonal tilework in the kitchen and bathrooms, cedar closets, and a full basement (where they're storing the remnants of their orchid business, the greenhouse having been destroyed by a huge oak branch that fell in the early January storm this year). It was fun and fascinating to tour the house and the yard, and a bit exhausting to contemplate all the work they've done so far -- installing the back lawn, excavating a rock garden, building vegetable beds, constructing gates and arches, etc.

On the way home, a raccoon strolled across the street and lingered, creekside, for several full minutes, although it was 1 p.m. and he or she surely should have been asleep somewhere. D. couldn't quite see it out the window, ironically because it was too close to the car.

A baby raccoon featured in part of Mollie Peer today, a pet of the Penobscot shaman, John Neptune, whom Mister Walton and Sundry Moss encountered on the train from Portland to Hallowell. Meanwhile, local baseball star Wyck O'Hearn has rescued a young boy, Bird, from beneath the Portland wharf, at the behest of Mollie.

In looking at pictures on-line of Acadia National Park last night, I came across a photographer whose dazzling work I would like to own, Frantisek Staud. I hope he wouldn't mind that I'm displaying one of his copyrighted photos here, mostly as a reminder to myself of his work in case I ever have money... This remote cottage is in the Faroe Islands:

Happy birthday (#91) to Grandma Nonnie today.
