(1) Having decided to grill some vegetables along with the various types of chicken sausages we were having for Memorial Day dinner, I made a point (for once!) to soak the wooden skewers ahead of time. When it came time to use them, though, I found that what I'd been soaking actually were udon, for Japanese soup. Try threading a mushroom onto a limp noodle.
(2) After D's nap, I offered to take him on a little "hike" before dinner, as soon as I finished a chapter in the fifth and final Cooper book. I did so, then went to put in my contacts, and somehow haven't managed to find the book since then. I've spent 25 minutes looking for it. How can one misplace a book in such a small space?
(3) When D. and I were walking on the paved trails around Brae Burn, he wanted to go off on a little grassy side-trail. I quickly noticed some very healthy-looking poison oak and used the opportunity for cautionary education. Then I noticed an interesting green bug on one of the leaves, and when D. couldn't see the bug, I...

...took hold of the leaf with my bare fingers and moved it to show him. Oh dear. I need those two fingers, too. Well, I wasn't allergic to poison oak for many years, so if I'm lucky maybe it will let me off easy.

On the trail, we saw a couple of girls after my own heart, I think, aged about 13 or so. One of them was holding a camcorder, and filming the other, who was posing on a footbridge over a little creek. The second girl had a large piece of moon-and-stars-and-dark-blue fabric draped around her shoulders like a cloak and was holding a makeshift wand. They seemed embarrassed to be seen, which was too bad; I'd have loved to let them know how fun they looked.
