Tonight was book club, at T's house. We had read Little Fires Everywhere, by Celeste Ng. Or rather, that was the book we planned to read. Maybe four of us read all of it, and a few read some, and several didn't even start (that's how we often are). BHW had accidentally read Celeste Ng's other novel instead (which she highly recommended). So we had grand fun doing a thorough recap of this complicated book, while playing with T's new shih tzu puppy.
RI, who arrived late, read aloud her favorite passage, the one about how hard it is when your kids are growing up, how it's like having to satisfy yourself with the smell of an apple when all you want is to devour it all, down to the core. It had been my favorite passage too.
So there was much talk about parenting. And LB let us know that her son's wife is pregnant, and they're not allowed to call the child a baby yet, only a fetus, so our new favorite word became "grandfetus."
Meanwhile, AC had to leave early so she could get up at 3 a.m. and fly to Central California to help with a project for creating "insect corridors" throughout the monocultures.
RI decided to host for next month, and decided we'll read Pride and Prejudice, which at least one of us hadn't read. Afterwards she linked her arm in mine and we came to my house so she could borrow Longbourn.
