Social weekend

J. and I had a grand time this weekend, socially. It's great that he's an extravert, and that I've learned how to act like one in small groups! First, yesterday, we went to a baby's one-year birthday party, a party at which I knew one other person and had met another couple once before, years ago. We parked at the Waldorf School and walked uphill for two blocks (130' gain in elevation), which felt like a lot of exercise. We spent two and a half hours hanging out there, culminating in two birthday cakes - one with an orange-almond frosting (homemade, following a recipe adapted from Julia Child, and the other with a fairly bitter chocolate frosting (from Sweet Life Bakery). I had small tastes of both.
In the evening we went to my company's holiday party, which this time was at the golf course. We chose our table and hoped someone would join us, and while we were away getting appetizers a young couple did so. I'd met the woman briefly in a meeting last week, and now we got to know her and her boyfriend. After a fair amount of the usual small-talk, we eventually discovered that yay they are geeks too, and then we had _lots_ to talk about. Dinner was a nice pasta bar, and there was a dessert contest, and a photo booth. We didn't participate in the swing dancing lessons, but we could watch the other people who were trying. All in all, it was much more fun than either of us expected.
This evening, then, another young couple came over and we ordered pizza and chatted for about three and a half hours. This was our friend DG and his wife AA. She had broken her foot doing laundry a week ago, and was pretty much stir-crazy at home, so I think she was really happy to get to be elsewhere. Fortunately, we have quite a lot in common with them in terms of tastes and interests. She was absolutely in love with my "Cinnamon Bun" plush toy, the big one, and when I mentioned that my next favorite in that line was the "Shrimp Sushi" it turned out that she already had that marked on Pinterest!
