This afternoon, I went to a concert wiith viol and vocal music by the Renaissance composer William Byrd, under the auspices of the Oregon Bach Collegium. This organization brings together various musicians for each of its concerts, and today's musicians were doubtless quite experienced (mostly my age or older), but... I've never before been to an instrumental concert where abruptly one of the musicians spoke up and corrected another. "Sixty. Sixty." Presumably he thought someone else was lost and should be at measure 60? He then did something similar in the next piece, too. I hope the other musician(s) appreciated it and found it helpful, because as an audience member I found it extremely jarring, and after the second time it was difficult to relax and try to follow the threads in the music.
