So yesterday, J. heard there was a TV movie or something based on Wheel of Time that hadn't been publicized, and that Brandon Sanderson didn't even know about. We set up the DVR and recorded it. The cable company claimed it would last 90 minutes, but only 31 minutes got recorded, so we were concerned.

However.

As it happened, the show probably wasn't even 20 minutes long, if you subtract the credits. It consisted of one formally dressed man wandering around a fancy house looking for his family, and then interacting with a dark-dressed man, and then discovering that his family was dead at his own hand. (Basically, a dramatization of the prologue.) At one point there were "special effects" showing lightning around his body, and at another point there were very hokey flames. In other words, it was pretty terrible.

So it turns out the company that had the rights to develop media products for Wheel of Time were about to lose them, as of Wednesday, so a few weeks ago they recorded this "pilot episode," then they paid for infomercial time in the middle of the night to establish that they had, in fact, met their contractual obligations and could keep these rights from reverting to the estate (which has numerous bidders at the ready). And by watching it on TV, I now have an informed opinion about what is sure to be a controversy in geek culture.
