In honor of his birthday, D. agreed to get up an hour “early” (1 p.m.), and after breakfast, we went to Safeway to get treats for his friends and then played a Magic “pack war” (an informal easy way to play with just one booster pack apiece). Then I drove him over to his best friend’s house for their twice-weekly “ensemble” practice. Unfortunately, his friend had forgotten about it (!), so D. called me to come pick him up. (Two of the other kids were out of town and a third couldn’t make it, and the remaining one understandably didn’t want to practice with only D, by themselves at someone else’s house.) Too bad D. had to spend a half an hour sitting there in the 93-degree heat, and too bad he didn’t get to share his cookies and candy with his friends, but I’d taken the day off work and was happy to spend time with him.

For his first gift (besides the money my sister sent him in a card), I copied our favorites among the special mod maps for Warcraft III from my old laptop to his computer, and he happily played on those maps until J. arrived with his gifts. Mine were Magic cards (from the cats, their namesake cards, and from me), and a Clash of Clans t-shirt, plus the phone he’d gotten at the beginning of the summer. J’s were the registration for the Magic grand prix they’re playing in soon, plus VIP status, which gives him a bunch of perks, along with a bag of jelly beans from the coast, a nice Magic-themed mousepad, and a nifty little flying toy from the fair.

Then came dinner – and marvel of marvels, what D. wanted most wasn’t pizza, not even from the restaurant he keeps pestering us to go to, but rather, a bowl of pasta with Sunday’s leftover spaghetti sauce. Easily done! Then J. applied himself to the project of getting our three computers to play Warcraft III together on the local network, while D. and I watched Face Off. Then we sang the birthday song and ate some of the apple pie I’d spent an hour making earlier in the day. And then, finally, we played two one-hour games of Warcraft III, one an Enfos game and one a real game, followed by a bit of our current book, Sanderson’s The Alloy of Law. Other than the part where he sat around in the sun feeling stood up by his friend, early in the day, I think he had a nice time!
