You know those vertical-box-on-a-stick things outside houses for sale? Where the real estate agents put lots of copies of the house's specs, so that passersby can take the info home with them? On my after-dark walk this evening (east on 43rd, past the middle school but before Fox Hollow), I came across one of those, incongruously labelled, "Free Poems." I stopped and learned that this was a "Poetry Cache," full of copies of a poem, a service random strangers were "providing to the community." So I reached in and acquired my own copy of a poem by Marianne Boruch. I carried it in my hand like a scroll, and when I came to the point where I planned to turn back, I stopped and read it beneath the warm amber street light.

MY SON AND I GO SEE HORSES
by Marianne Boruch

Always shade in the cool dry barns
and flies in little hanging patches like glistening fruitcake.
One sad huge horse
follows us with her eye. She shakes
her great head, picks up one leg and puts it down
as if she suddenly dismissed the journey.

My son is in heaven, and these
the gods he wants to father
so they will save him. He demands I
lift him up. He strokes the old filly's long face
and sings something that goes like butter
rounding the hard skillet, like some doctor
who loves his patients more
than science. He believes the horse

will love him, not eventually,
right now. He peers into the enormous eye
and says solemnly, I know you. And the horse
will not startle nor look away,
this horse the color of thick velvet drapes,
years and years of them behind the opera,
backdrop to ruin and treachery, all
innocence and its slow
doomed unwinding of rapture.

Pasted from here.

"Poetry cache" - this makes me happy.
