Sunday thoughts

Such a beautiful day today: sunny and 84. I spent the afternoon outside, reading and gardening. (Finally the rhododendrons are mostly free of blackberry vines, but I'm a bit scratched up.)
Thoughts on...
Reading Sophocles' Ajax. This was just the right length for a sunny afternoon. I should get more Greek plays from the library. This Cambridge edition had commentary on the facing page, which didn't add much to my understanding of this particular play, but I'm thinking it would help with, say, Aristophanes.
Reading Deci & Ryan. I've read several of their shorter papers on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, but now I'm finding the comprehensive one on self-determination theory to be pretty slow-going. This is, I think, because I need to imagine where idealism might fit in relation to their work, which is on goals and innate psychological needs. That Royce book on loyalty is helping there - so thanks,
owl_of_minerva!
Watching Flushed Away. D. loved it, and there were many funny moments, but R. and I found it too pell-mell. I suppose it's in keeping with the title metaphor of things spinning out of control, but a bit more attention to the idea of presenting a story might have made it a lot better. They should have studied the Toy Story movies. I liked the music.
